Online Academy Overview
WCA uses an award-winning internet-based structure with over 50,000 multimedia features including videos and digital tutors. The curriculum presents a Christian worldview. WCA’s structure prepares students for today’s college course procedures. Students can complete their schoolwork from anywhere using typical broadband internet access. Electronic scoring instantly corrects work while the questions are fresh and before wrong answers are in memory too long. Grades and progress are viewable online by both the student and parents.
One of the strengths of WCA’s online system is most of the student’s work is instantly scored electronically. This offers a great advantage over other educational approaches because the student does not wait to find out if their thinking is right or wrong. Instant scoring can reduce future academic struggles. However, there are occasional times where the student will do essay or full-sentence answers that cannot be electronically scored. All WCA online programs provide teachers that handle subjective scoring where answers cannot be electronically scored. This structure saves the parent an enormous amount of work that would normally fall on the parent, leaving the parent to focus on encouragement.
8th-12th grade students use our Online With Teacher On Call Program, but 3rd-7th grades can choose between three different online programs. Parent Teacher Online and Online With Assistance and Online With Teacher On Call are available to 3rd-7th grades.
Parent Teacher Online (available to 3rd-7th graders) is called “Parent Teacher” because the parent will be much more involved throughout the day than our Online With Assistance or Online With Teacher On Call programs mainly due to the parent being responsible for subjective scoring and tutoring when necessary. A large portion of student work is automatically computer scored, which saves parents time and promptly corrects student thinking while the concept is fresh in the mind. Digital tutors and additional resource tools are available throughout the curriculum for academic help. Parents and students will have access to the built-in messaging system within the curriculum for procedural assistance. Parents and student can view grades online anytime, which enhances student motivation. Parents can seamlessly transition their student from this program into WCA’s two other online programs if a higher support level is ever needed.
Online With Assistance (available to 3rd-7th graders) includes subjective scoring when the system cannot automatically score work. Parents and students will have access to the built-in messaging system within the curriculum for procedural assistance. Although there are built-in digital tutors and additional resources available when a student needs academic help, Online With Assistance does require the parent to be more involved than our Online With Teacher On Call program. There are many other benefits listed for the Online With Assistance program on the By Grade section.
Online With Teacher on Call (available for 3rd-12th grades) includes all the features of Online With Support, plus students also receive extra academic assistance and tutoring from teachers at WCA. Parents can direct their student to use a WCA teacher for concept help and questions throughout the year. Students will have daily interaction with teachers to ensure the best opportunity for success. Along with the built-in message center within the curriculum, one-on-one academic assistance can be provided via telephone, online whiteboard, and other tools. Online With Teach On Call is our best program to allow parents to focus on student encouragement.
Although there are some progress guidelines, students are guided through the lessons at their own pace, giving them the chance to master concepts at their ability before moving on to more challenging lessons. This allows students more time when needed, but also allows them to move quickly when they have mastered a concept.
WCA’s online academy will work on both PC and Mac browsers using broadband. Some tablets will work. Check with us.
Kindergarten through 2nd grade use easy to use booklets that dovetail into the online curriculum. WCA also offers a Parent Teacher Booklet program for 3rd-7th. Curriculum samples can be found at the bottom of By Grade pages.
New students and at least one parent will go through a brief orientation, so students can get an easy start with Western’s online program. Students will be issued a login to enter our online academy. There are several built-in lesson plan features to keep students on track. From the Assignments page, the student can easily see lessons (L) and projects (P) that need to be finished or done next. There are approximately 130 lessons per two-semester subject. This screenshot example shows the top of the Assignments page. Typically, 3rd-7th will have five subjects and 8th-12th will have six subjects. Online The student just clicks an arrow next to the lesson or project to begin or resume.
When a student clicks a lesson (L) assignment, it will take the student to the first reading page or section of the lesson. The lesson pages have various multimedia features, including text to speech. Many lesson pages have a “Tiny Tutor” that can be clicked to hear an alternative presentation of the content if needed. At the top of the lesson page, the student can toggle between the current lesson section and required questions to be answered. In this screenshot example, Section 1 of 2 has 9 questions. Section 2 of 2 will have additional questions. Lessons will vary on the number of sections. The student also has a menu on the right side for additional features such as printing the lesson, reference tools, student notetaking, and activating text to speech. The student can highlight a word or phrase, then click the Reference button to see additional reference materials for the highlighted text.
Many lessons have an embedded video. The student can view a transcript of the video if needed. Also, the Vocab Arcade in the screenshot below allows the student to play a game to reinforce vocabulary dealing with the lesson. The student can click Courses at the top of most screens to go to a particular subject to see all previous lessons, projects, and questions for a course subject, usually for review before a quiz or test.
